Why this quiet licensing change is actually big news for defense contractors and other CMMC-bound organizations
If you run a business that touches federal contracts, handles Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), or is working toward CMMC certification, you’ve likely already invested in Microsoft’s Government Community Cloud, High (GCC High). It’s the secure, U.S.-only version of Microsoft 365 built for organizations like yours. Good news: Microsoft just made that investment go further, at no extra cost.
Microsoft recently announced that several advanced device-management and security features, previously available only as a pricey add-on, are now bundled directly into the Microsoft 365 G3 and G5 licenses that most GCC High organizations already own. In plain terms: capabilities you may have skipped because of cost are now already included in your subscription.
What Actually Changed
Every device your team uses, laptops, phones, tablets, needs to be managed and protected so it doesn’t become the weak link that puts your CUI, your contracts, or your CMMC certification at risk. Microsoft Intune is the tool that does this: it enrolls devices, enforces security settings, and helps your IT team spot and fix problems before they become incidents.
Historically, the most valuable Intune features lived in a separate, additional-cost bundle. As of this month, Microsoft has folded several of those features directly into licenses many CMMC-focused organizations already hold. Here’s the rollout in plain English:

Why This Matters for Leadership, Not Just IT
It’s tempting to file this under “IT news” and move on. We’d encourage you not to, for three reasons that matter at the leadership level:
- Budget impact: Features that used to require a separate purchase, and a separate budget conversation, may already be sitting unused in the licenses you’re paying for today.
- Compliance posture: Several of these capabilities directly support the access-control and configuration-management requirements assessors look for during a CMMC Level 2 assessment.
- Timing: Availability is rolling out in phases by tenant and workload through the rest of the year, so “we already have Microsoft 365” doesn’t automatically mean “we already have this activated.” That’s worth confirming, not assuming.
The One Catch: Confirm It’s Actually Turned On
Because this rollout is phased tenant by tenant, having the right license doesn’t guarantee the features are provisioned and configured in your environment yet. Someone still needs to verify entitlement, confirm provisioning status, and, most importantly, turn these protections into actual policies that fit your compliance program. That last step is where the real value gets unlocked.
