As you know, the GCC (Government Community Cloud) is a specialized type of Cloud deployment that allows defense contractors to secure datasets provided to them from the DoD. GCC High, is a separate data center that meets the Government standard for security and is located in the Continental United States and managed by US citizens. In one of our recent blogs, we examined how to deploy Audio Conferencing for this. In this blog, we examine how to deploy the SBC (Session Base Controller) for it as well.
What Is The SBC?
It is acronym that simply stands for “Session Border Controller”. In non-technical terms, this is the tool that is used to help protect and secure any VoIP based communications that you are engaged with. A company that deploys a SBC has complete control over the VOIP data traffic and can secure the traffic as needed. To deploy it, follow these steps:
To Configure The SBC
- Log into your Azure Government M365 portal at: office365.us, and from there, navigate over to the Administration Center.
- From there, go to:
*Voice
*Direct Routing
*Click on the SBC Tab
3) Click “Add”.
4) Enter in a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN).
Important: Make sure that the domain is registered with your tenant.
If you are using a subdomain instead, make sure that is registered also.
5) Follow the illustration below, and make sure that all of the necessary configurations have been completed properly:

6) Once these configurations have been completed, click on “Save”.
To Enable The End Users
To do this, follow these steps:
- Log into your Azure Government M365 portal at: office365.us, and from there, navigate over to the Administration Center.
- From there, go to:
*Users
*Manage Users
3) Select “End User”.
4) Go to “Account General Information”, and from there:
*Select “Edit”.
5) Go to “Under Assign Phone Number” and from there:
*Select the “Phone Number” from the drop-down menu.
*Select “Direct Routing”.
6) From here, enter the appropriate phone number.
7) Select “Apply”.
Call Routing Configuration
The third step is to configure the Call Routing. There are numerous options you can select from, and they include the following:
- Routing the call with one PSTN
- Routing the call with multiple PSTN
More information on how to set up one option (pr even both) can be seen here.
Configuration Of The Phone Numbers To An Alternate Format
If the need ever arises, you can also convert the existing phone numbers into a different format, depending upon where your end users are located at geographically. There are four different options to choose from, and they are as follows:
*Creating an inbound call into to a ten-digit value.
*Creating an inbound call to a four-digit value.
*Creating an outbound call to a four-digit, non-E.164 value.
*Creating an outbound call to a ten-digit non-E.164 value.
